Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate in Stomach Medicine

Acid, base titration by
Automatic Potentiometric Titrator

Sodium hydrogen carbonate is used in antacid or other pharmaceuticals. Here, a sample from commercially sold stomach medicine is titrated with 0.5mol/L sulfuric acid according to Japanese Pharmacopoeia codex 15. The contained sodium hydrogen carbonate is determined by the endpoint, which is the maximum inflexion point on titration curve.

Boric Acid in Pesticide

Acid base titration by
Automatic Potentiometric Titrator

Boric acid in pesticide is quantified according to JIS K 8863-2007 Boric Acid (Reagent).

After D-Mannitol and water are added to the sample for extraction, it is titrated with sodium hydroxide up to the endpoint. Direct titration for boric acid is difficult because boric acid hardly dissociates acid. Polyols such as mannitol form complexes with boric acid and release hydrogen ions. This operation makes neutralization titration for boric acid possible. The endpoint is the inflexion point on titration curve.

The boric acid in pesticide is calculated from titration volume.

Osaka University Shimadzu Omics Innovation Research Laboratories

In these laboratories, we aim to actively promote various kinds of collaborative research in order to tackle the issue of extending healthy and active lifespan, focused on the use of omics with metabolomics at its core. Until now, Prof. Fukusaki, who develops applications for metabolomics technology, and Prof. Matsuda, who focusses on data analysis, have been carrying out research together at the Osaka University and Shimadzu Analytical Innovation Research Laboratory. In moving to the new Omics Innovation Research Laboratories, they hope to up the pace of innovation to provide direct solutions to these types of societal prolems.

In the pharmaceutical industry, increasingly rigorous compliance with data integrity (DI) is required by regulatory authorities. In this context, the attention of regulatory authorities with respect to analytical instruments is turning not only to liquid chromato- graphs (LC), gas chromatographs (GC) and other chromatogra- phy equipment, but also to UV-Vis spectrophotometers (UV), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometers (FTIR) and other spectroscopy equipment.

At Shimadzu, we offer multiple analysis data systems capable of accommodating DI: a database management edition (herein referred to as “LabSolutions DB”) and a client server edition (herein referred to as “LabSolutions CS”). In terms of accommo- dating DI, systems and operations must satisfy the ALCOA princi- ples. Both LabSolutions DB and CS (hereinafter referred to as

LabSolutions DB/CS”) are equipped with functionality to support this. As one example, the Analysis Sequence application was developed to enable measurements in accordance with an analysis sequence created in advance.

With the Analysis Sequence application, the measurement parameters and report format to use in analysis are speci ed in advance, so settings/operational mistakes during measurements can be reduced. Additionally, combination with the report set function also makes it easier to check the logs of operations implemented for consecutive measurements.

This article provides a simple overview of DI, as well as a description of the functionality and role of LabSolutions DB/CS and the Analysis Sequence application.
